Team 7-Eleven- Geoff Drake
In 1980, there were exactly four professional bike racers in America. Six years later, an American cycling team would wear the coveted yellow jersey of the Tour de France. Soon after, the team would win Italy’s greatest race—the Giro d’Italia. "Team 7-Eleven" is the extraordinary story of how two Olympic speed skaters, Jim Ochowicz and Eric Heiden, assembled a local band of amateur cyclists and turned them into one of the greatest cycling teams the sport has known. Author Geoff Drake, (formerly of Seattle, and past editor of Bicycling Magazine, Velo News) will talk about the book, the team, and the improbable journey of these North American riders to the pinnacle of European pro racing in an event at the Seattle Bike Expo.... with a special guest from Penticton, BC, Canada-
Ron Hayman.
Team 7-Eleven’s Ron Hayman was one of the first Canadian cyclists to turn professional in the late 1970s, later becoming a Canadian cycling coach- He was runner-up on the list of the ten most important Canadian cyclists of the twentieth century. Hayman competed on the Canadian Olympic cycling team in Munich in the 1972 Summer Olympics in the pursuit and again in Montreal 1976 Summer Olympics. He was seven times Canadian national champion on the road and track. In 1979, still an amateur on an English team 'London Australia', he won the 1979 Tour of Ireland, beating a certain Mr. Stephen Roche (a future Tour De France winner) en route to victory!
He raced as a professional from 1979 through 1988. His best-known team, of which he was one of seven founding members, (and Team Captain) was the 7-Eleven Cycling Team that also featured Eric Heiden, Davis Phinney and that went on to feature many other future stars.

"Anyone interested in the future of our communities is going to appreciate Mia Birk’s personal account of how we transformed Portland, OR, into the standard for bicycle-friendly cities – and subsequent odyssey in spreading the benefits of bicycling to communities throughout North America." -The Honorable Earl Blumenauer, Member of Congress
Mark Johnson
Mark Johnson has covered cycling as a writer and photographer for national and international publications since the 1980s. His work has been published in cycling titles including VeloNews in the United States, Cycling Weekly in the UK, Velo in France, and Ride Cycling Review in Australia, as well as general-interest publications including The Wall Street Journal and the San Diego Union-Tribune. A category 2 road cyclist, Mark has also bicycled across the United States twice and completed an Ironman® triathlon. He has a PhD in English literature from Boston University and has worked as a freelance writer and photographer for the Slipstream Sports cycling team since 2007. His other passion is surfing, which he does frequently from his home in Del Mar, California.
For Bike Expo he will discuss his new book: Argyle Armada: Behind the Scenes of the Pro Cycling Life . Embedded with Team Garmin-Cervélo for its 2011 season, writer-photographer Mark Johnson brilliantly chronicles the team’s most intimate personal dramas and public celebrations. From winter training camp on the cobbled lanes of medieval Girona, Spain, to hard-earned stage victories in July’s Tour de France, to flesh-shredding crashes at the Tour of Spain in September, Argyle Armada brings the life and work of a pro cycling team into focus through incisive writing and spectacular color photographs.
More than a book about racing, Argyle Armada is a portrait of life as a member of a pro cycling team during a time of painful transition for the sport. Johnson unveils the dramatic forces that Garmin-Cervélo must navigate as team founder Jonathan Vaughters tries to push forward his vision of a reformed sport. Along the way, countless difficult decisions must be made to keep the team competitive in the chase for ProTour points, money, respect, and fame. With all-access insight and spectacular color images, Argyle Armada offers an unprecedented look inside a team battling for the future of professional cycling.

Let’s Get Visible! Reflective Vest and Patch-making Workshop
with Amy Walker from Momentum Magazine | Sunday, 1 – 3 p.m.
As a safety-conscious cyclist who wants to be seen night and day by other road users, your off-the-shelf options that combine visibility and style are limited. Most of the vests out there are decorated with nothing but a big old “X”—not very inspiring for those of us who also care about our appearance and like to express our personality while we ride. Amy Walker wants to help you create a reflective artwork to wear while you ride and that shares your passion for being alive. Put a bird on it! (Or a cat or moose or tree; an abstract pattern from your imagination; or a message for drivers to read.) We’ll create rain-proof vests as well as simple patches that you can attach to your jacket or your bike. This workshop is intended to be fun and inspirational. Basic materials will be provided but we invite you to bring your own reflective bling if you’ve got it!
Expo Drawing
Be sure to swing by the festivities at the Cascade Bicycle Club booth to enter the drawing to win great prizes - no purchase necessary.
For the kids we welcome back the fun and interactive Little Nutty Kids Bike Zone featuring a treasure hunt, bike carnival games, bike stunt course, learn to ride, DIY bike art table and the Watts-Up Computrainer game.
Finally, be sure look for the Laurelhurst School Unicycle Team showcase, Daily REI How-To Clinics, Intro to STP Seminar, Healthy Cooking Demo, Scraper Bike Display and over 150 other great venders offering everything bicycle.
